Saturday October 29th 1932:
Sent on radio into Camooweal this morning and received good report on the condition of Mavis. Left for Alroy after ‘smoko’ and reached there in time for lunch. Had a lazy afternoon on my back with a book. Played a couple of games of tennis. Johm Staunton arrived late in the evening and held the floor until nearly midnight.
Sunday Oct 30th 1932:
Gathered the kiddies together for S.S this morning and Mrs Griefham came in also as she helps the kiddies on other Sundays. The stock camp arrived home this afternoon, also Mr and Mrs Easy from Rocky. Went around the men on the place and got all but one to come to the service at night and so had a congregation of 12. All had a big ‘pow-wow’ afterwards.
Monday Oct 31st 1932:
Did some mustering this morning and yarded 3 clean skins. Baptised one white child and2 half castes. Had Mrs Reilly and Miss Coleman from here as passengers. Went across to Alexandria and had lunch there and after smoko went on to Rankine. Stopped for awhile with the pumper on the plane. Stayed at Rankine and had some music.
Tuesday Nov 1st 1932:
(Peter Pan won the Cup) (ie Melbourne Cup) A dreadfully windy dusty day and a day of misfortune for many travelers. On leaving Rankine Miss Coleman’s hat blew off and traveled cross the plain at a great pace. I had to go a mile in the car before I could head it off. A few miles further along my swag blew off and we went 7 miles further before I noticed it. Later in the day we lost another parcel and had to go back for it. had smoko at Soudain where awe stopped for awhile and then on to Avon for lunch. Stayed here until smoko and then left for Camooweal reaching home at tea time. Got a big budget of mail at the P.O.
Thursday Nov 3rd 1932 :
Left for Mt Isa this morning, taking Miss Coleman with me. Called in at Yelvertoft. Reached Isa at 6.30 pm. Met Mrs Wilson as we went in and took her to hospital. Went to McIntoshs and had tea and got cleaned and went over to hospital and saw Mavis. She looks well.
Friday Nov 4th 1932:
After breakfast this morning went down with Dave Whitney and had a couple of sets of tennis. Went across to the mines office and paid an account and did other business in the town. After lunch went across to the hospital and spent the afternoon with Mavis. Left the car at the garage to have a couple of jobs done. After tea went over to the public hospital and saw Mrs Clancy and little Gwen Lewis and then went across to the mines hospital. Dr told us tonight that he was afraid that Mavis; scalp would not graft on. Mrs Wilson was rather upset. Brought Mrs Wilson back over to the town and then we found the other car load of Camooweal people who had just arrived and spent the remainder of the evening with them.
Saturday Nov 5th 1932:
Spent the morning in making all my purchases, taking the others over to see Mavis, calling on Mrs Moores, calling at Police Station to see a chap who is on his way to Stewarts Creek for 6 months for wife desertion and playing some tennis. After lunch played our match with Mt Isa and lost buy 2 games. After tea went again to the hospital and then attended a social given in our honor by the Mt Isa tennis club.
Sunday Nov 6th 1932:
After leaving the social took Mrs Reilly and Ted to the hotel to pack up and then went and loaded up my car and at 1am the 3 of us left for Camooweal. Reached Yelvertoft at 4am and left a tin of petrol but everyone asleep. As day was breaking reached old Jim McLeans hut so roused him out and boiled the billy and had a drink of tea. This break woke me up and I was right then for the rest of the drive reaching Camooweal at 8.30am. Had a clean up and a bit of sleep and then went to S.S. Most of the kiddies were there. Had a bit of a sleep after lunch and then got ready for the night service at which a fair number were present.
Wednesday Nov 9th 1932:
The big day of the month is here again bringing quite a number of the ‘country’ folk into town. Was busy myself seeing different ones and getting ready fro the hospital meeting at night, which went off very quietly, quite an appreciable change.
Thursday Nov 11th 1932:
Did some visiting around the town and hospital today as well as doing a lot of writing as I intend to leave tomorrow sometime for Burketown. The mailman did not get in today so there must have been rain up there somewhere.
Friday Nov 11th 1932:
Did not manage to get away today as jobs on the car and other business kept me going all day. Burketown mailman came in today and reported good rain up the other end.
Saturday Nov 12th 1932:
Loaded up the car this morning and left town a little while before lunch. Taking my pup with me on this trip. Had a good run without trouble the 50 miles to Undilla. Stayed the night, having a musical evening with my records before retiring.
Sunday Nov 13th 1932:
Went across the back way to Thorntonia this morning and over 25 miles of awful road. It was a wonder there was anything left of the car or the pup or myself left. Stayed for lunch here and then went on the 90 miles to Gregory, all without mishap. Pulled up at the Police Station. After tea went across the river to the homestead. Schaffert was confined to his bed through a fall from his horse. Would have liked to have a service here but nobody seemed to think about it. Went back to the Police Station and rolled out my swag.
Monday Nov 14th 1932:
Called on the old lady at the hotel this morning and went across to the homestead where I received apologies for not being asked to hold a service that night, but they all forgot until it was too late. Found a family of Methodists too, who are camped near the homestead, very nice folk too. Left the Gregory then and went on, calling for awhile at both Carringtons, Donaldsons and Almora, where I had lunch. They have had wonderful rain here and there is green grass 9 inches high. A great feast for the eyes. From here to Brookdale the traveling was very heavy and in places boggy but I got through alright. Stayed awhile here and then on again and pulled up at Clarkes and then from here traveled in with Stathams reaching Burketown at sundown. Made myself at home at Stathams and after tea went across to Hosiers for awhile.
